Turning Lead Into Gold

It doesn’t matter how good the product is – even if it’s made to a European Standard like rolled lead sheet to BSEN12588 – if the people using it are not properly trained.

Responding to the increasing demand for lead sheet installation, the Lead Contractors Association have initiated their own advanced leadwork training programme through Lead Delegated Assessment Limited, with the first course being completed in October 2001.

The intensive one week courses are based upon the “Hallmark” silver and gold standards for leadworking set by LDAL and combine practical hands on installation instruction with lecture room setting out and design theory, health & safety, etc.

As much as possible is packed into the ten hour plus working days, with “students” working on a full scale mock roof (accessed only by ladders and scaffolding) that has been constructed within a

small warehouse building rented from Leicester College for the LCA’s exclusive use.

The various rooftop installations are supplemented by bench work in the area below, plus further large scale models of spires, domes, dormers and vertical cladding.

These are advanced courses that are only available to LCA members and to qualify for them candidates must have between three and five years direct on site experience in leadwork. By providing training at this level, the LCA is taking the first steps towards ensuring the future of the industry remains secure in the hands of a properly trained workforce.
