LEAD CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION
THE ROOFING INDUSTRY ALLIANCE "HALLMARK" INITIATIVE

LCA Members become the first UK contractors to be Hallmarked
Hallmark Certification and T & P Lead Roofing Ltd, became the first to be assessed for Hallmark Registration. Both companies are long standing LCA members and George Richardson (Richardson Roofing) (left) and Tom Flaherty (T & P) (right) receive their Hallmark Certificates from Construction Industry Minister Nick Raynsford (second right) and RIA Deputy Chairman Sir Michael Latham (second left).

The Roofing Industry Alliance (RIA) Hallmark scheme is designed to reduce roofing defects by setting industry wide standards for contractors, designers and producers to adhere to.

By specifying “Hallmark Roof” the client will receive a roof designed by an approved designer and installed by an approved contractor, using approved products and materials.

The job of policing the scheme has been given to independent Delegated Assessment Organisations (DAO) approved and licensed by the RIA and accredited by the United Kingdom Assessment Service (UKAS), the body recognised by the Government to accredit evaluators.

Given the specialist nature of the lead industry, an equally specialist DAO was formed to assess lead sheet applications, Lead Delegated Assessment Ltd. At the end of 2000, two LCA members became the first roofing contractors in the country to successfully be assessed and become “Hallmarked” by LDAL.

Under the scheme, contractors may apply for Certfication or Registration. Certification is the likely option for those with a quality management system that meets ISO 9002 and who are registered with “Constructionline”.

In December 2000, Richardson Roofing Co. Ltd became the first contractors in the UK to be assessed for Hallmark Certification and T & P Lead Roofing Ltd, became the first to be assessed for Hallmark Registration. Both companies are long standing LCA members and successfully achieved “Gold” level Hallmark status after proving their full compliance with the scheme rules governing company operations and procedures, as well as demonstrating on four nominated sites the highest level of technical performance and design awareness.

Our warmest congratulations to them both and we hope now other LCA members will take up the Hallmark challenge, setting a standard for others in the roofing industry to aspire to. With the contractors driving quality standards forward, the challenge is there for the architects and designers to respond to this initiative by specifying the Hallmark Roof (or at the very least the Hallmark Contractor), for major roofing projects.
